About AHI
The American Health Initiative, Ltd (AHI) was founded in 1999 to advance the cause of providing accessible and affordable healthcare to all Americans. The intent was to create momentum for a national dialogue around issues of the uninsured through regional thought-leader forums connected to the broader community by focused Internet-based discussions.
After a series of regional and national forums AHI began the exploration of focused initiatives to engage thousands of seasoned health professionals in voluntary service to the uninsured through community based free clinics. In 2004, with initiating support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, the AHI formed TAP-IN (Third Age Professionals Initiative) to provide retired and near retired health professionals with opportunities for purposeful civic engagement around the health needs of the uninsured through those clinics and other venues.
In late 2006 TAP-IN began the successful recruitment of such seasoned physicians for volunteer service in some 60 Free Clinics in North Carolina and Virginia. In 2008 with additional support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, as well as other public and private corporate interests, TAP-IN has extended its recruitment efforts to include nurses, dentists, pharmacists and mental health professionals. The program will also be introduced in Atlanta, Houston, and Cleveland in 2008 with the intent of being active in 25 states over the next 6 years. See www.tap-in.org for more on the TAP-IN program.
