American Health Initiative - Spring 2010
The American Health Initiative (AHI) was founded in 1999 to create momentum for healthcare reform through regional thought-leader forums connected to the broader community by Internet-based discussions.
In 2004, with initiating support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, AHI formed TAP-IN (Third Age Professionals Initiative) to provide retired and near retired health professionals with opportunities for purposeful civic engagement, linking them to volunteer opportunities in select Free Clinics in North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Ohio and Texas.
By mid 2009 a rapidly changing healthcare environment prompted AHI to revise its strategy for engaging senior clinicians by moving to create a unique Senior Health Service Corps that could provide a partial solution to the impending primary care workforce crisis facing Federally Qualified Health Centers as they expand to provide access for up to 20 million additional patients under healthcare reform. The "corps" would function as a collaborative learning community of experienced clinicians engaged in guiding community health care development at a high level.
